Moments ago, Supreme Court Justice Anthony Kennedy announced that he is retiring from the highest court in the land, meaning Donald Trump will have the opportunity to create a solidly conservative court that could last decades.

USA Today reported that since being appointed by Ronald Reagan in 1988, 81 year-old Kennedy has been considered a swing vote in a wide range of issues involving abortion, affirmative action, gay rights, and capital punishment. He announced that he would be retiring in a letter to President Trump that he called, “My deal Mr. President.”

“For a member of the legal profession it is the highest of honors to serve on this court,” he wrote. “Please permit me by this letter to express my profound gratitude for having had the privilege to seek in each case how best to know, interpret, and defend the Constitution and the laws that must always conform to its mandates and promises.”

Trump has previously said that when it came time to fill his next Supreme Court seat, he would choose from a list of 25 potential nominees assembled with the help of the conservative Federalist Society and Heritage Foundation. One of the frontrunners for the seat is Judge Brett Kavanaugh of the U.S. Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia Circuit, who once clerked for Kelly. Other potential replacements are Thomas Hardiman of Pennsylvania, who serves on the U.S. Court of Appeals for the 3rd Circuit, and Raymond Kethledge of Michigan, who serves on the 6th Circuit.

This will be Trump’s second time appointing a justice to the Supreme Court. He previously appointed Neil Gorsuch after the death of Antonin Scalia.

This is an enormous opportunity for conservatives everywhere, so we hope Trump picks wisely! We also hope that Kennedy enjoys his retirement!
